What a path does that a plan doesn’t

A plan says what you do today. A path says why this week is different from last week, and where it’s heading.

A training plan is a list of exercises with sets and reps. That’s necessary, but it doesn’t tell your client where they stand. Why is this week lighter? Why can I suddenly eat more? When will I get there?

A path sets out the weeks one after another. From here to a goal: a first five kilometres, twelve weeks to get stronger, a weight-loss programme with a diet break in it. Each week has a phase, such as build-up, deload or peak, with a short explanation your client reads. And each day a task, such as long run, conversational pace.

Periodisation becomes visible. A lighter week every fourth week is a common approach. In a plan, that’s a different plan; in a path, it’s a week with its own name and a reason. Your client sees it coming and knows why.

Nutrition moves with it. A week can have an adjustment relative to your client’s goal: eating more in a hard build-up week, less in a cut. Their nutrition screen takes it into account.

Ticking off with proof. If a day asks for something measurable, such as a run or a measurement, the tick only counts if that’s actually there that day. It’s not distrust, but the difference between I went for a run and a route on the map.

You see who’s falling behind. For each path you see how many days your clients completed in the last week. If someone misses a few in a row, send them a nudge: a notification on their phone, at most one per day, so it stays a nudge and not nagging.

A path isn’t a contract. Your client can stop, and put right one missed day every four weeks. It’s a route, not a prison. But anyone who has a route knows, even on a bad day, why they’ll go again tomorrow.
